Position Summary

This on-call position is responsible for the successful supervision of the George R. White Library operations and access services, including student workers, during times when regular staff is unavailable.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

· Manage the library building and the Circulation Unit during hours of need as a back-up supervisor. Anticipate and recognize current or impending barriers to departmental success and proactively problem solve to mitigate or eliminate them.

· Supervise the work of student employees, in accordance with University policies and federal and state laws, in order to ensure that library operations run smoothly. Supervision includes scheduling, solving coverage gaps, delegating work, and providing performance feedback or correction, if needed.

· Supervise stacks maintenance (shelving, shelf reading, and special projects).

  • Answer phones and respond to email and other inquiries.
  • Maintain patron records in an integrated library system.
  • Be punctual and ready to work within advanced, and possibly, short notification.
  • Assist in the book sale department.
  • Process reserves and interlibrary loan requests.
  • Provide back-up coverage for Access Services unit as requested.
  • Maintain department level statistics using Excel.
  • Assist in preparing and maintaining training materials for the unit.
  • Assist in preparing written documentation for circulation procedures.
  • Plan, organize, and execute projects for improvement of Access Services.
  • Accomplish ongoing job-specific learning and improvement through instructional materials, seminars, etc.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Work Contacts

Interacts with faculty, staff, students, student workers, and community members on a regular basis. Interactions may be face to face, electronic or via telephone.


Scope of Work

Activities and tasks support library operations. Follows standard operating procedures throughout course of work with some latitude to make decisions without immediate supervisor approval. Work requires knowledge of institution policies and practices.


Working Conditions

Library and office setting. Low exposure to noise.


Minimum Physical Requirements

Able to tolerate prolonged positioning at a computer terminal; repetitive computer use, and typing.

Able to lift up to 50 pounds to/from table level on an occasional basis.

Able to lift up to 3 lbs overhead.

Able to lift, pull, grasp, stoop and reach within an office environment.

Able to effectively participate in two-way conversation.


Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and related experience.

1-3 years of progressively responsible administrative support experience with at least 1 year of experience working in a library circulation department.

Demonstrated supervisory experience.


Preferred Education and Experience Requirements

Experience coordinating faculty reserve requests in a library setting.


Minimum Requirements (Knowledge, Skills and Abilities)

Able to demonstrate excellent interpersonal, communication, and analytical skills on a consistent basis.

Able to monitor and direct the work of others, providing corrective feedback and praise as appropriate.

Excellent organization and documentation skills.

Proficient in the use of the Microsoft Suite including Excel for maintaining and analyzing data.

Able to readily and effectively use the library’s Integrated System software and the University’s administrative software during the course of daily activities.
